Obituary for Vincent H. "Tom" Rhodes

Vincent H. “Tom” Rhodes, Jr., 79, of Mercersburg, PA passed away January 10, 2022 in UPMC, Harrisburg, PA following a brief battle with COVID 19.
Born May 3, 1942, in Chambersburg, PA he was a son of the late Vincent H., Sr., and Clara Mae (Shaffer) Rhodes.
Tom was a member of the class of 1961 at James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg. He worked in his earlier years as a truck driver for Brake’s Construction and then as a plumber for Mercersburg Plumbing & Supply. Tom and his wife, Shirley, owned and operated Rhodes Sunoco in Mercersburg for 21 years. In retirement he worked part time for Dean Metcalfe Construction.
Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed many years at his cabin and Island house with his family and friends. He loved his wife, Shirley, with all his heart. They worked together at the Sunoco for over 20 years and then enjoyed traveling, outdoor activities, taking rides in the Cove to watch wildlife, going to auctions, and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Tom was a top athlete in his younger years at James Buchanan. He held the pole vault record for many years and played basketball and soccer.
Tom was also a man of all trades. He could build or fix anything. He shared all his knowledge with his children, in the hope that they would learn and pass that knowledge on to their children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Tom was truly loved by so many.
