Richard G. “Dick” Martin, 75 of Fort Loudon, PA passed February 13, 2022, in Meritus Medical Center, Hagerstown MD.
Born September 18, 1946, in Chambersburg, PA; he was the son of late Christopher Martin and Martha (Martin) Martin. The baby of the family; Dick was doted on by his three sisters: the late Rosita Robinson, late Donna Kreitz, and Barbara Boyd of Florida. A talented basketball and baseball player; he started to work early, making use of his throwing arm, delivering papers for the Public Opinion.
Following graduation from CASHS in 1964, Dick enlisted in the United States Airforce, serving four years during the Vietnam era and receiving the Air Force Commendation Medal. After an honorable discharge, he worked as an electrical lineman for the Borough of Chambersburg, and later at Frick company of Waynesboro, PA. Dick was employed for 26 years at Letterkenny Army Depot as an engineering technician.
Known to his comrades as “Marty”, he proudly served over 20 years with the Air National Guard, 167th Aerial Port Squadron, Martinsburg, WV; traveling all over the world and receiving numerous awards and decorations before retiring Master Sergeant in 2006. He had a firm handshake and warm heart. Crediting the military for shaping him into the man that he was, he was forever indebted and genuine in his lifelong commitment to honor, and selfless service to family and country.
After retirement, Dick, a “do-it-yourselfer”, stayed active making home improvements, golfing, computer repair consulting, and enjoying the fellowship of various social and veteran’s clubs. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Dick was a die-hard Washington Redskins fan.
Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with family; his wife Carol (Smith) Martin, whom he married June 13, 1985, daughter Emily (Martin) Gardner, and his two grandchildren, Ellie and Wilder.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday March 21, 2022 at Stenger Hill Cemetery, Fort Loudon, with Pastor Summer Love Bair officiating. Military honors will be rendered by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chamberburg.
