Obituary for Mildred Reed

Mildred E. (McFadden) Reed, 80, of Mercersburg, passed away on Sunday, March, 26, 2023 at WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past several months. Born November 14, 1942 in Mercersburg, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Mary (Keefer) McFadden.

Mildred graduated from James Buchanan High School in 1961 and married Clarence E. Reed in Hagerstown, MD on October 9, 1981.

Mildred was known for her excellence as a caregiver. For nearly 20 years, she operated an in-home daycare center providing quality care for many of the children in the area. Her reputation for keeping children safe, healthy, and happy while their parents worked earned her much praise and admiration. Some of Mildred’s proudest moments came from watching children in her care grow up to become doctors, nurses, teachers, and other professionals. After reaching an age too old to chase children, Mildred turned her attention to senior caregiving. The same quality that brought her success in caring for children proved equally crucial to seniors. Patience! Mildred truly did have the patience of Job and now that quality becomes a central part of her legacy.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Clarence (Gene) Reed: two sons, Donald E. Carbaugh, Fort Loudon, and Joey C. Carbaugh, (wife Susan), Chambersburg: three grandchildren, Keith Carbaugh, Mercersburg: Ashley Horner, Hagerstown: and Kaitlin Egolf (husband Cole) St. Thomas: one great-grandson, Easton Egolf. In addition, Mildred has three siblings, Robert McFadden (wife Shirley) Mercersburg, Dorothy (Dottie) Gehr, Mercersburg, and Evelyn Barnes (husband Jeff) of Greencastle.

A funeral service for Mildred will be held 11:00 AM on Thursday March 30, 2023 at Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, PA with Reverend W. David Kent officiating. There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends and relatives one hour before the service. Burial will take place at Stone Church of Little Cove, Mercersburg, PA.
