Obituary for Garnet Hornbaker

Garnet Owen Hornbaker, 87, fell asleep in Jesus on June 17, 2022 at ManorCare in Chambersburg, PA after a lengthy illness.

Born August 12, 1934 in Mercersburg, PA, he was a son of the late Lewis H and Eva May Werdebaugh Hornbaker.
Garnet married Naomi B. (Laye) Hornbaker on October 15, 1955 celebrating their 66th anniversary last year.

Garnet served in the U.S. Army from 1957-59 spending 19 months in Germany, reaching the rank of SP4. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a long-time member of Emmanuel Chapel of Smithsburg, MD. During his lifetime, he worked at Lowengart & Company, Greencastle Packing Company, PennDot, and Modern Home Appliance Company. He spent 29 years in construction work and retired after his last 10 years with Waynesboro Construction.

Garnet is survived by his wife of 66 years, Naomi B. (Laye) Hornbaker, a sister, Phillis L. Hornbaker, many nieces and nephews, and special friends Bob and Linda McCardell.

He was preceded in death by sisters; Kathryn (John) Shives, Mary (John) Thomas, Arrietta M. Hornbaker, Betty (Elwood) Armstrong and brothers; James E. Hornbaker, Lewis Westly (Hilda) Hornbaker, Robert F. (Gladys) Hornbaker, Virgal S. Hornbaker, Clarence H. Hornbaker, Ralph E. (Patricia) Hornbaker, and John J. Hornbaker.

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at Fries Funeral Home Inc., Mercersburg, PA with Pastor Jonathan Laye and Pastor David Pine officiating. There will be a viewing 1 hour prior to the service and burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg, PA.
