Obituary for Betty J. Phenicie

Betty J. Phenicie, 93, of Menno Village, Chambersburg, PA, died Friday, January 7, 2022.
Born February 5, 1928, in Cumberland, MD, she was one of nine children of the late Milo and Mary (Reed) Clem.
Betty graduated from Fort Hill High School, Cumberland, in 1946, and in 1947 married John Homer Phenicie, who preceded her in death. After moving to Lemasters, PA, in 1952, they had four children, Pat Phenicie-Grandel (husband Dan) of Chambersburg; Ronald Phenicie (wife Carla) of Scottsdale, AZ; Julie Errico (husband Mark) of Dudley, MA; and Neil Phenicie (wife Lori) of Chambersburg. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Heather Goodman, Ethan Grandel, and Jenna Errico, and her great-granddaughter, Alanna Goodman. Betty’s remaining sister, Anna Mae Ruckman, lives in Willard, OH.
Faith and family were two defining aspects of Betty’s life. As a member of the Nazarene Church in Hagerstown, she taught Sunday School and helped with Junior Church and the Bible Release Time program. Her other interests included gardening—especially growing tomatoes—reading, and baking and cooking for her family. She was well known for her sugar cookies and her cranberry sauce. She and her sister Naomi and their families often spent holidays together. They shared many of the same hobbies, including trying new recipes and crafts. Another interest of hers was elephants. Friends and family contributed to her collection of elephant figurines and other elephant-themed souvenirs from their travels.
A private funeral service will be held in Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg, PA with the Reverend Harold Yeager officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 300 Ridgeview, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
